Glossary of governed AI engineering

The canonical definitions of the vocabulary Agile Solutions uses. Published as an open reference: cite them, argue with them, or correct us.

AI engineering governance

AI engineering governance is the discipline of ensuring that software built with artificial intelligence is faithful to declared intent, sound in its architecture and backed by auditable evidence, without reducing delivery speed.

It differs from AI governance in general in that it does not regulate the models a company exposes to customers — a service chatbot or a fraud engine — but the AI that writes the software. Its unit of analysis is the development lifecycle, not the model. Its measurable outcome is less rework: a defect is settled at the link where it is still cheap.

Shadow AI

Shadow AI is the practice of building software with artificial intelligence tools without governance, without evidence of how it was built, and without visibility into the effect on the architecture.

It is a flow problem rather than a compliance one: its cost surfaces as rework, as reviews nobody can perform properly, and as architecture that degrades through commits accepted unread. The term deliberately echoes Shadow IT, but the risk differs: AI does not introduce unauthorized tools, it introduces uncomprehended code.

Governed AI

Governed AI is the state in which every piece of AI-assisted software is born faithful to declared intent, on verified architecture, with auditable evidence and cost attributed per unit of work.

It is the operational opposite of Shadow AI, and it is reached by governing AI to go faster rather than by banning it: verification happens at the point where fixing costs minutes instead of sprints. Compliance evidence is not the goal of the approach but its free by-product.

Frontier firm

A frontier firm is an organization that treats artificial intelligence as a governed part of how it operates, rather than as a tool informally adopted by individual teams.

In the FRONTIER framework it is described through seven pillars, with FLOW as the supreme one, because every other pillar exists so that work can move without waiting or repeating. Agile Solutions scopes itself explicitly: it realizes the AUTOMATION pillar and instruments ECONOMICS and FLOW, not the whole transformation.

FRONTIER

The frontier-firm framework

FRONTIER is the transformation framework describing how a frontier firm organizes itself, through seven pillars among which FLOW is supreme.

It is the organizational layer of the Agile Solutions proposition and the one that opens the executive conversation. The FORGE platform realizes its AUTOMATION pillar and instruments the ECONOMICS and FLOW pillars; culture and strategy pillars sit outside the declared scope.

APEX

Professional Architecture of EXcellence with AI

APEX is the governed-engineering methodology defining how software is built with artificial intelligence, through eight stages, explicit gates and a fidelity chain tying declared intent to shipped code.

Its gates do not work as approvals that stop the work, but as verifications settling at the cheap link what would otherwise resurface at the expensive one. Human responsibility is preserved at every decision: the developer drives and the engine executes.

FORGE

Frontier Operations for Refined & Governed Engineering

FORGE is the governance and evidence platform for artificial intelligence applied to software engineering, made up of a portal, an MCP layer, a dual-axis assurance plane and the forge-canon agentic engine.

It is neither a code generator nor a compliance tool: it is the layer that makes what AI builds verifiable and what building it costs attributable. Its value lies not in any single piece but in the FRONTIER framework, the APEX methodology and the execution engine being coherent with one another.

forge-canon

The agentic engine of the FORGE platform

forge-canon is the agentic engine that executes the APEX methodology on Claude Code, running on the client’s own infrastructure.

It lives inside the FORGE platform, surrounded by the portal, the MCP layer and the assurance plane that govern it and produce its evidence. Running on the client’s machines has two consequences: code never leaves their perimeter, and the marginal cost of operation stays low.

Fidelity chain

The fidelity chain is the sequence of eight verifiable links — intent, specification, design, plan, build, verify, evidence and attest — connecting what was asked for to the code that eventually ships.

Each link emits a ternary verdict, and the complete chain constitutes the Evidence Pack. Its operational purpose is that a defect stops where fixing it costs minutes, instead of resurfacing in production, where it costs sprints.

Ternary verdict

FAITHFUL · UNGUARDED · BROKEN

The ternary verdict is the result each link of the fidelity chain emits: FAITHFUL when it held and was verified, UNGUARDED when no active control existed, and BROKEN when it failed.

The distinction between UNGUARDED and FAITHFUL is deliberate and is the hard rule of the system: an unguarded link is never represented as approved, because absence of control is not evidence of correctness. An UNGUARDED verdict flags rework that has not surfaced yet.

Evidence Pack

The Evidence Pack is the artifact gathering the complete fidelity chain, requirement traceability and the verdict on every link of a software delivery, in a form that survives external review.

It is not written after the fact for an audit: it is the trail the process itself left while preventing rework. That provenance is what makes it defensible to an examiner, because it documents what happened rather than what someone remembers doing.

Dual-axis assurance plane

The dual-axis assurance plane is the view that crosses the fidelity of a software delivery with its cost, so both dimensions are read on one screen.

Fidelity answers whether what was built is what was asked for — that is, whether the speed was real or will have to be repeated; cost answers what getting there consumed. Measuring one without the other produces decisions that look good in a meeting and bad at quarter close: the worst quadrant, costly and broken, is invisible to any single-axis tool.

Agent Operator

Agent Operator is the Agile Solutions certification accrediting a professional to drive the agentic engine with engineering judgment, within the APEX methodology.

Its declared purpose is for clients to stop depending on the firm that trained them: a certified operator should be able to take a governed pipeline to a mergeable result without outside intervention.
